Electric car subsidy in Luxembourg: Klimabonus Mobilitéit

DB2024AU01449_small

The transition towards more sustainable mobility is accelerating across Europe, and Luxembourg is no exception. To encourage drivers to switch to cleaner vehicles, the Luxembourg government has introduced several financial incentives for the purchase of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

These incentives are now grouped under the Klimabonus Mobilitéit programme, which replaces and expands the former initiative known as “Clever fueren.” Thanks to this scheme, drivers may receive a subsidy of several thousand euros when purchasing an electric vehicle.

But how exactly does this subsidy work? Who can benefit from it? Which vehicles are eligible and what steps are required to apply?

In this article, we explain everything you need to know about electric vehicle subsidies in Luxembourg, including eligibility requirements and the advantages of switching to electric mobility.

What is the Klimabonus Mobilitéit?

The Klimabonus Mobilitéit is a financial incentive provided by the Luxembourg government to encourage the purchase of low-emission vehicles. It forms part of the country’s national strategy to reduce CO₂ emissions and accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility.

The programme has two main objectives:

  • encourage drivers to adopt electric vehicles
  • reduce the environmental impact of individual transport.

The subsidy applies to several types of vehicles, including:

  • battery electric cars
  • hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
  • certain plug-in hybrid vehicles
  • other forms of electric mobility such as electric two-wheelers.

The scheme is part of Luxembourg’s broader policy to promote low-emission transportation.

How much is the subsidy for an electric car in Luxembourg?

The amount of the subsidy depends on the type of vehicle and certain technical characteristics, particularly its energy consumption.

For fully electric cars, the subsidy can reach:

Up to €8,000

for highly energy-efficient electric vehicles that meet the official criteria.

Up to €6,000

for other electric vehicles that meet the eligibility conditions but have a higher energy consumption.

The exact amount may vary depending on the purchase period, the registration date and the vehicle’s technical specifications.

In any case, these incentives can significantly reduce the purchase price of an electric vehicle.

Are plug-in hybrids eligible for a subsidy?

Yes, plug-in hybrid vehicles may also qualify for a subsidy under certain conditions.

To be eligible, the vehicle must meet specific requirements, including:

  • it must be a plug-in hybrid
  • its CO₂ emissions must not exceed 50 g/km.

The subsidy can reach approximately €1,500, depending on the applicable rules.

However, public policy increasingly focuses on fully electric vehicles, which are considered more effective in reducing carbon emissions.

Who can benefit from the Klimabonus?

The subsidy can be requested by different types of applicants, including:

  • private individuals residing in Luxembourg
  • certain legal entities
  • owners or holders of vehicles registered in Luxembourg.

In the case of leasing, the subsidy may also be granted provided that the vehicle is registered in accordance with the relevant rules.

To qualify, several conditions must be met:

  • the vehicle must be registered in Luxembourg
  • the application must be submitted within the required deadlines
  • the vehicle must comply with the technical eligibility criteria.

How do you apply for the subsidy?

The subsidy application must be submitted after the vehicle has been registered.

There are two main options.

Online application via MyGuichet.lu

Applications can be submitted online through the MyGuichet.lu platform.

To access this service, applicants need:

  • a LuxTrust product
  • or an electronic identity card.

This option is generally the fastest.

Application by post

It is also possible to submit the application by post using an official form.

In that case, several supporting documents must be provided, including:

  • the vehicle registration certificate
  • the certificate of conformity
  • the purchase invoice
  • the leasing contract, if applicable.

Why more and more drivers in Luxembourg are switching to electric cars

Electric mobility is growing rapidly in Luxembourg for several reasons.

Government incentives

Financial support programmes such as the Klimabonus Mobilitéit make electric vehicles more affordable.

Expanding charging infrastructure

The network of charging stations has expanded significantly across Luxembourg and neighbouring regions.

Today, electric vehicles can be charged:

  • at home
  • at work
  • in public car parks
  • along major highways.

Lower running costs

Electric vehicles offer several economic advantages:

  • lower maintenance costs
  • electricity is often cheaper than fuel
  • fewer mechanical parts subject to wear.

Over the lifetime of the vehicle, the total cost of ownership can be lower than that of a combustion engine car.

Choosing an electric vehicle that fits your needs

Before buying an electric car, it is important to look at a few key factors.

Range

Modern electric vehicles generally offer more than enough range for everyday driving.

For many drivers, real-world range comfortably covers daily needs.

Charging

It is also useful to identify the charging options available to you:

  • a home charging point
  • charging at work
  • access to the public charging network.

Intended use

The right model will often depend on how you plan to use the vehicle most of the time:

  • urban driving
  • business travel
  • family use
  • longer journeys.

Volkswagen electric models

Volkswagen now offers several electric vehicles designed to suit different driver profiles.

Some of the most popular models include:

  • Volkswagen ID.3
  • Volkswagen ID.4
  • Volkswagen ID.5
  • Volkswagen ID.7

These models combine solid range, advanced onboard technology and a high level of driving comfort.

Where can you buy an electric car in Luxembourg?
